Lizzo and Beyoncé Listen to their Fans about Disability Inclusivity

I know on the surface the issue of Lizzo and Beyoncé altering their music lyrics to correct word usage that is offensive to the disabled community might seem like just another instance of political correctness. This is not one of those instances. While I don’t know what originally inspired either artist to choose the offending words they did, I hope it was just an innocent oversight. By how they responded with edited non-offending lyrics after the disability community advocated for change, I think it probably was. As I like to say, learn better, do better.

Art can be a tricky and subjective thing sometimes. As a creative person I have a huge amount of respect for the creative process. I feel that artists should be able to express themselves with a sense of freedom— keeping in mind that you can’t please everyone, and still be true to your art.

However, with Lizzo and Beyoncé each having such huge platforms of social influence, it is of the utmost importance that they take their responsibility as cultural influencers seriously. Their microphone is not just a vessel for them to communicate lyrics, it is a megaphone that platforms the ideas and attitudes reflected in those lyrics. In short, what they say, matters. A lot.

That is why it is such a big deal that the disability community spoke up about the offending lyrics. And even as important, that the artists heard the criticism and course corrected. See, sometimes music isn’t just about music. It’s about taking a stand, making a change, and showing the world that progress involves not just what we see but also what we hear. In a bold move of solidarity and sensitivity towards the disabled community, Lizzo and Beyoncé, two powerhouses of pop and soul, have decided to edit the lyrics of their songs, setting a precedent for the industry's responsibility towards all its listeners.

Lizzo's action came into the spotlight in May 2022, following the release of her single "GRRRLS" from the album "Special." Shortly after its debut, listeners and disability advocates highlighted the use of a term in the lyrics that was considered derogatory towards people with cerebral palsy. Recognizing the impact of her words, Lizzo promptly announced her decision to change the lyric, stating her commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring her music does not inadvertently perpetuate ableism.

Beyoncé, the Queen Bey herself, followed suit in July 2022 with her album "Renaissance." The song "Heated" contained a similar term that, once brought to her attention, Beyoncé agreed to remove. Her team confirmed that the lyrics would be changed, underscoring her respect for all her fans and the importance she places on being an ally to the disabled community.

The responses to Lizzo and Beyoncé's decisions were overwhelmingly positive, with fans and advocacy groups alike praising their willingness to listen, learn, and act. Social media platforms buzzed with discussions on the power of words, the role of artists in society, and the ongoing journey towards true inclusivity. By acknowledging their oversight and taking swift action, both artists showcased the importance of empathy, respect, and the ability to evolve.

Feeling the Love But Demanding More Progress

The actions taken by Lizzo and Beyoncé signify a larger movement within the entertainment world towards greater inclusivity and sensitivity. It's a reminder that music, in all its forms, is for everyone. It has the unique ability to connect, heal, and bring people together, transcending the barriers that often divide us. As such, ensuring that it respects the dignity of all individuals is paramount. This incident also opens up a broader conversation about the responsibility of artists and creators in shaping a world that values every person's experience. It's about more than just avoiding certain words; it's about fostering a culture that recognizes diversity as a strength and sees the beauty in every individual's story.

As I applaud Lizzo and Beyoncé for their decisions, we're reminded of the ongoing journey towards a more inclusive society. As the music industry continues to evolve, let's make sure we keep the pressure on for inclusivity. Let's celebrate the artists who are willing to stand up, make changes, and lead with empathy. Because at the end of the day, it's not just about the music; it's about the message it carries and those who are impacted by those messages. The willingness of artists like Lizzo and Beyoncé to adapt and embrace inclusivity not only enriches their artistry but also sets a standard for the industry. It's a harmonious blend of music and empathy, where every lyric sung and every note played echoes the values of respect, understanding, and love. Let's keep listening, learning, and moving forward, together.
